The Bachelor of Computational Design at UNSW is a three-year full-time degree that prepares you for a career designing future solutions in the built environment through technology.
Studying this degree, you’ll think critically and creatively and see your design solutions brought to life through studio-based classes. You’ll learn to approach challenges differently through design-thinking and apply cutting-edge technologies including 3D modelling, digital geometry and parametric design, responsive environments, form making, and robotic and digital fabrication using 3D printers and laser cutters.
Supported by our open and inclusive Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture, you’ll join an interdisciplinary community of practice. Alongside a diverse group of creative and built environment students, staff and industry professionals, you’ll work to solve real-world problems.
In your third year you’ll complete a project set by our industry partners, meaning you’ll graduate with a professional portfolio and the industry connections to launch your career.
Bachelor of City Planning (Honours)
The Bachelor of City Planning at UNSW is a four-year full-time honours degree through which you’ll learn to shape sustainable, equitable, healthy and inspiring built environments.
City planning is an exciting, varied and progressive profession. UNSW’s planning degree will equip you to work at the interface between development, land use, environment and urban design. You’ll gain the knowledge, skills, and career focused experience to turn creativity and critical thinking into real-world solutions - shaping the future of our cities and regions.
Work experience is a defining feature of this degree. As part of the Arts, Design & Architecture (ADA) community you’ll work alongside students and professionals from across the built environment, just as you would in the workplace. In your third year, you’ll undertake a Practice Year, where you’ll focus on practical and professional experience, benefitting from UNSW’s strong ties to industry and world-leading research in urban planning.
Bachelor of Architectural Studies
Learn how to design buildings and their settings to meet the needs of individuals and communities, taking sustainability, culture and economy into consideration. Lectures and design studio sessions cover architectural design, architectural communications, architectural history and theory, architectural science, the environment and technologies, and architectural construction and structures.
Combined with the Master of Architecture, this degree offers you an enviable head start in contemporary and multidisciplinary design practice.
Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours)
The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours) at UNSW is a four-year full-time degree through which you’ll prepare for a career designing sustainable and beautiful environments.
As a landscape architect, you’ll become a creative problem solver, combining art and science to plan, design and manage environment that conserve and celebrate ecology, cultural values and symbolic associations. You’ll be equipped to work with cities and communities around the world, designing the open spaces of the future in response to issues such as urbanisation, migration, sustainability and climate change.
UNSW is the longest established, accredited Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program in Australia. You’ll learn with staff who are both leading researchers and practitioners as you explore design principles, graphic techniques, ecological processes and human modification of the environment.
Work experience is an essential part of this degree, meaning you’ll graduate with the theoretical knowledge, professional skills, and industry connections to launch a career with impact.
Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Honours)
The Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Honours) at UNSW is a four-year full-time degree that will prepare you to improve peoples’ lives through the interior environments they inhabit.
As a graduate of Interior Architecture, you’ll work in a design discipline that focuses on interior environments as integral parts of our cities, including all aspects of their spatial, social and material assembly. Interior architecture and interior design share common ground but differ in their scale and extent of three-dimensional space making. While interior architecture includes the manipulation of the spatial, material and structural elements of a space, such as walls, floors and staircases, interior design focuses on the planning and detail of individual rooms.
Supported by our open and inclusive Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture (ADA), you’ll join a uniquely interdisciplinary community. As you would in the workforce, you’ll collaborate with students and professionals across the built environment disciplines to develop creative solutions that respond to current societal, functional and aesthetic challenges. You’ll gain the knowledge and career focused experience to design these solutions from the scale of individual rooms to the scale of cities.
Bachelor of Industrial Design
The Bachelor of Industrial Design at UNSW is a three-year full-time degree (plus an optional one-year merit-based Honours year) that prepares you for a career as an Industrial Designer. As an Industrial Designer you’ll influence the way we live by designing the products that we use every day.
Studying this degree, you’ll gain the experience and confidence to turn creativity and critical thinking into real-world solutions through product design, enabling lives with purpose. Bachelor of Construction Management and Property
The UNSW Bachelor of Construction Management and Property is one of the most respected in Australia and will prepare you to meet the demands of a constantly evolving industry. You'll develop broad knowledge and skills for the management of property development, construction site management, project management and quantity surveying.
There is a strong emphasis on construction and property economics and management skills, including cost, time, human resources, organisational behaviour, risk management and information technology.
Luminocity 2021
Curatorial Statement
Dr Ainslie Murray and Dr Cathy Smith
Luminocity is a major annual exhibition that presents a selection of undergraduate student work from the UNSW School of the Built Environment. This year the exhibition is jointly curated by Dr Ainslie Murray and Dr Cathy Smith and is designed and developed by James Hargrave and Louise Jewiss.
Luminocity 2021 is a conscious departure from conventional relationships between physical and virtual exhibitions, reflecting our commitment to innovative design through creative practice. The virtual exhibition is designed to accompany a physical installation which will be presented, post-lockdown, in the Red Centre Gallery. These mutually evocative environments are designed to create curiosity as the audience explore a series of atmospheric elemental spaces. Fields of fog, tunnels of light and pools of water subtly reference our unique harbour city whilst inviting viewers to discover the exhibition content. Playful fireflies prompt possible routes through the online show and an ambient soundtrack by Zane Trow evokes watery landscapes. In both its physical and virtual forms, Luminocity 2021 presents a new mode of exhibition practice that not only profiles a remarkable collection of exhibited works, but also provokes creative responses to navigating space.
The collection of works in Luminocity includes recent drawings, videos, models, interviews and essays made by students across seven disciplines within the School of the Built Environment. These works are assembled to convey a collective critical response to contemporary urban, social, and environmental issues and together they celebrate the immense creativity and diversity of our school. The unique voices of students, staff and alumni come to the fore as we trace individual trajectories through key experiences in our undergraduate degrees. From small-scale products to large-scale plans, the works in the exhibition collectively reveal our ambition in fostering graduates who make meaningful and impactful work that actively shapes our future environments.
